MV Agusta F4 SPR

Last week we went retro for our auto spot, bringing you the 937 Lagonda LG 45R Rapide from period drama Atonement. This classic British car oozed sophistication and elegance, but this time around we have a need for something a little sleeker, sharper and altogether saucier – the Agusta MV F4 SPR from I, Robot. The 2004 Will Smith sci-fi flick is often scolded for its product placement (it was named as the worst offender in movie website the Shiznit’s ten worst movies for product placement), an issue we intend to give a wide berth, but while brands such as Audi and Converse have come under serious attack for their promotion in the film, Italian motorcycle manufacturers Agusta managed to walk away from the controversy relatively unscathed. Perhaps the F4 SPR driven by Smith’s Detective Del Spooner looked too good to slate.
As a super bike, the Agusta F4 SPR has many features to get petrol heads salivating. The F4 series is known for its unique features such as its single-sided swingarm, large front forks and four pipe undertail exhaust, but I, Robot’s SPR was even more special. Unlike 1999’s mass produced F4 750, the 2004 750 SPR was released in limited numbers (only 300 were made) and was considered to be the end of the 750 range that started back in 1997. This last F4 model boasted an improved 146 hp engine and could hit a top speed of around 180mph.
Despite a history that has seen the MV Agusta name bought and sold (the last developments saw Harley Davidson swoop in); it has remained a favourite in Hollywood. Not only has the former Fresh Prince hopped onboard an F4 for an action thriller, but also the likes of Angelina Jolie in Gone in Sixty Seconds, Wesley Snipes in The Art of War (an Oro) and most recently Christian Bale in The Dark Knight. Let’s see if the love affair continues under the stewardship of Harley Davidson.
